For many Jews around the world, Shavuot is THE time to eat cheesecake.

Why do Jews eat Cheesecake on Shavuot?

  1. On Shavuot the Jews received the Torah at Mount Sinai. In order to receive the Torah, they purified themselves and wore white clothes. Through eating milky foods, Jews are signifying the level of spirituality which the Jewish People were to reach in order to receive the Torah.
  2. Before receiving the Torah, Jews did not keep meat and milk separate. When they received the Torah, they were then obligated to use different cooking pots for meat and milk. Because they did not yet have the pots, the just ate milky foods until such time as they had the correct utensils for meat and milk
  3. In Psalms 68:16-17, Mount Sinai is called by several names. One of them, mountain of peaks, Bar Gavnunim in Hebrew, shares the same root as gevinah, the word for cheese.
  4. Some historians speculate that after receiving the Ten Commandments, the ancient Israelites had been gone from their campsite for so long that their milk had soured and became cheese. It's possible that they fasted while receiving the Ten Commandments and reached for milk upon returning.
  5. The custom of eating dairy on Shavuot is also derived from the biblical verse: Minhah hadashah la-Adoshem be-Shavuotekhem (your Feast of Weeks, when you bring an offering of new grain to the Lord; Numbers 28.26). The initials of the four Hebrew words spell me-halav (from milk), implying that foods made from milk are acceptable on Shavuot.
  6. Jews are fond of playing with deeper connections between the numerical value of a word and other words or meanings with the same or double or half the numerical value to 'prove' various linkages and allude to other meanings. This is called gematria. The numerical equivalent of the word milk in Hebrew, chalav, is forty. The same number of days that Moses was up on Mount Sinai.
